What Happens During a Session

Step 1: Prep your computer, laptop or tablet to use.

You will need a device such as PC, Mac, Chromebook or iPad with a stable internet connection. The device will need to be equipped with a webcam and an audio headset.

You will need to use a device that your child is familiar with. During the session they may be asked to move objects around on the screen, so younger children may find a tablet easier to interact with than using a mouse.

The session will run on the Kanga application, accessed through a web browser. Kanga currently ONLY supports Chrome, Firefox or Edge so you may need to download a new web browser before the start of the session. You can read more about Kanga’s technical requirements in the FAQ page.

Step 2: Create a quiet space.

Make sure the area is free of distractions and noise, like a television. If necessary, have a headset available with both headphones and a microphone.

If you are joining your child during a session and plan to use a headset, you will need to a special “splitter” so that you can both connect with 2 headsets to sound and microphone. You can read more about Kanga’s recommended headsets and splitters in the FAQ page.

Step 3: Join session via web browser.

You will receive the website link for the session via email. Open the link in one of the supported web browsers (Chrome, Firefox or Edge) and follow the onscreen directions.

You may need to assist your child with logging in at the session start time.

You won’t be actively participating during the session, although you might need to stay with your child during the session depending on their age, attention level, or other distractions in the home.

Step 4: Interact on screen.

During the session, your child will interact with Kelci within the application. She will control the on-screen games and images while asking your child questions and encouraging play.

Kelci is directly facing your child, allowing her to see your child’s face, mouth and tongue as they talk. Kelci continuously adjusts the activities on screen and her interaction with your child based on the skills being addressed, your child’s developmental level and interests.

Step 5: Continue play at home.

Kelci encourages you to interact and play with your child to encourage communication practice. Open-ended questions and active listening are a great way to help your child.

You can find tips and recommendations on the At Home Practice page.
